Sixty-six-year-old Tonee "Valentine" Carter is a happy pianist. For the last 13 years, he has played at a piano bar in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where all kinds of travelers walk by: those going on vacations, those going on business trips or those going to visit loved ones. Many love hearing his soulful playing. One day motivational speaker Carlos Whittaker was rerouted to Atlanta after a speaking engagement had been canceled. Hearing Carter, he was floored but noticed that the tip jar was pretty empty. Suddenly I was like, what would happen if I asked my Instagram followers if we could give him the biggest tip he's ever gotten? he said. Within 30 minutes, we had raised $10,000. Whittaker sat down with him and the two chatted together, quickly becoming friends. Whittaker surprised Carter with the donations the pianist unknowingly received from kind-hearted people online while he was playing, and he nearly burst into tears. Before Whittaker boarded his plane, he told his followers they could continue to tip Carter. By the end of it all, the piano player was surprised with $60,000. That $60,000 is not mine," Carter said. "It's money that's going to go to others. There is only one way to say thank you, because words are inadequate. And that is to pay this forward.
