In recent years, toy maker Mattel has responded to criticism that its Barbie doll sets an unrealistic image of womanhood. The company has been trying to broaden that image by creating a wider variety of dolls, most recently one in the likeness of Dame Sarah Gilbert, a vaccinologist who developed the Astra-Zeneca Covid vaccine. This Barbie is one of six to honor women working in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. "I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of girls into STEM careers and hope children who see my Barbie will realize how vital careers in science are to help the world around us," Dame Sarah said.
