Thirty-six-year-old Lukasz Podolski, a former World Cup winner, has returned to play for his boyhood club, honoring a promise he made to his grandmother before her death in 2019. In spite of winning the World Cup in Germany in 2014, Podolski was rebuffed by ex-Poland manager Pavel Janas. Last month on Facebook he said, "Poland Zabrze. Where it all began, I'm returning home. A strong special feeling, I'm filled with lots of pride to play for this club."
