The owners of Apt Cape Cod, a restaurant in Brewster, Mass., decided abruptly to shutter their homey roadside establishment for the next several hours after staff were treated poorly by diners. The restaurant owners then offered staff the opportunity to enjoy a day of kindness. Now that they have reopened, the owners have posted a sign outside their restaurant that makes their expectations clear: If you cannot be kind, you cannot dine. As a small-business owner, I refuse to let my staff be treated less than human, and will continue to stand up for everyone in the service industry, said Regina Castellano, co-owner and chef at the restaurant.
