Madrid has been building a 75-kilometer forest around the city which is calculated to absorb 175,000 tons of CO2 a year. Mariano Fuentes, the capital's councilor for the environment and urban development, says that this effort will be one of many to "engage citizens in this new green culture" and maintain the city's condition. "At the end of the day, an infrastructure this big needs to be preserved with a minimum effort so it can be sustainable over time."
