An earlier transplant attempt had failed on the day of the planned surgery. Turner and his mother, Tashawn Jones, spent hours in surgery and days recovering. While Navy recruiters warned he might not be able to achieve his dream of enlisting if he went ahead with the surgery, Turner said, My mom comes first."
