Two recent University of California Santa Cruz graduates are tackling housing insecurity by creating the Slug Shelter, a nonprofit student-run organization to house homeless students. Connor Kensok and Abbi Cundall were inspired by the Bruin Shelter started by students at the University of Southern California - an idea now spreading around the state and beyond. UCSC provides aid and free emergency housing but some students need more help, the duo says. Cundall and Kensok see the shelter, which they hope to open this winter, as also offering professional development opportunities for other students.
