Child hunger advocates are praising Maine and California for deciding to continue universal free school meals after 2022 -- and hoping that other states and the federal government will follow suit. A federal program that has provided all students with free breakfasts and lunches during the pandemic will end in 2022. Maine, having seen the extent of the need, has decided to extend the free meals for all students, not just those who meet income guidelines, after the federal program ends. Proposed federal legislation has been introduced that would offer free breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack to all school children regardless of income.
