A UK college senior has invented a device that can better seal wounds from violent knife attacks and that he hopes will eventually be carried by all first responders. Joseph Bentley's new invention, the rapid emergency actuated tamponade or REACT, inflates a silicon balloon-like sleeve which applies pressure and allows blood to clot. When it's removed, REACT is deflated slowly and gently so the clots remain intact. The tamponade, which can be in place in less than a minute, is a prototype for which he's seeking a patent.
