At Hof Butenland near the North Sea, an ex-dairy farmer has turned his land into a retirement home for unwanted cows and other farm animals. Karin Muck and her partner Jan Gerdes are committed to helping Germany move away from its reliance on meat and dairy products towards more humane and sustainable practices. "For me it is clear, if we want to save this planet, then we have to stop using and consuming animals," Gerdes told The New York Times. "We have the economic power to enact change, but we have to want it," he said.
