American Indians and Alaska Natives have the highest vaccination rate in the US. The success is partly due to a sense of urgency about Covid-19 and partly because many tribes chose to work with the Indian Health Service rather than the states. To serve the 70 percent who live off reservations, Indigenous health services partnered with other groups. Many tribes also vaccinated non-Indigenous people who work with them. "Throughout Indian country, what you hear is 'be a good relative,'" according to Native American LifeLines. Do this for the grandmas, do this for the ceremony, do this for the language, because our people are precious.... We already lost a lot. We can't afford to lose more.
