Pfizer and BioNTech are developing a booster shot. While the companies believe "a third shot of their current two-dose vaccine has the potential to preserve the 'highest levels' of protection against all currently known variants, including delta," they are developing an updated version that will specifically target the highly transmissible delta variant now dominant in the US, CNBC reports. Evidence from Israel suggests a booster shot may be necessary 6-12 months after full vaccination to maintain the highest protection. As Delta is so transmissible, Americans are urged to get vaccinated before the fall when another surge is expected, particularly where vaccination rates are lowest.
