In 1968, A.E. Dick helped oversee the rewriting of Virginia's constitution so that black voting rights were guaranteed. He was a 34-year-old college professor during a period of civil unrest following the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. The document that was crafted renounced the constitution Virginia adopted in 1902. Three years later, on July 1, 1971, the revised one went into effect in the state where slavery began. On July 1, 2021, Professor Dick, who still teaches at the University of Virginia, helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of its adoption.
