The Welsh government is freezing new road-building projects as part of its plans to tackle the climate emergency, and an external panel will review all of its proposed schemes. The deputy minister for climate change, Lee Waters, told the Welsh parliament recently: Since 1990, Welsh emissions have fallen by 31 percent. But to reach our statutory target of net zero emissions by 2050, we need to do much more. The government recognizes the need to shift away from projects that encourage more people to drive and instead spend money on maintaining existing roads and investing in transit options. It's time to invest in an economy that's fit for the challenges of the 21st century and put Wales at the forefront of building a cleaner, fairer future for us all, said Haf Elgar, director of Friends of the Earth Cymru.
