Berlin has dedicated 1.5 million (about 1.8 million USD) to cultivate more than 50 wildflower gardens throughout the city over the next five years. For the past few years, residents have been requesting to grow their wildflower meadows to replace grass lawns. Other residents were skeptical, as they preferred flat lawns for picnicking or walking their dogs. However, local resistance died down after a heavy rain season brought a spectacular bloom to these meadows. This transformation goes beyond visual aesthetics, though. The main reason Berlin underwent this plan was to protect Germany's population of bees, over half of which are endangered or almost extinct. Christian Schmid-Egger, the coordinator of this project, says that eventually, many such hotspots could create a network of wilderness right inside our cities.
