In the face of the global climate crisis, there is growing recognition that the dependence on hydrocarbons represents an economic vulnerability for the maritime shipping sector, due to new environmental standards. Ports will have to be redesigned to support ships' energy needs during the transition to green energy sources. Ports are being modified now, in many places, to increase energy efficiency, and renewable energy production is being added to ports in many places as well.
