Ashley Vien grew up in a family that struggled with low income and addiction issues. Six years ago, when she became pregnant, she attended an alternative school to get her high school diploma and secure a job as a receptionist. Her family felt she was wasting money, when she decided to pursue an advanced diploma in human resources management from the Pilon School of Business at Sheridan College in Mississauga, Ont. But for Ashley, who is now graduating as a class valedictorian, dropping out of education was never an option. I hope that this shows them that, with everything that we've gone through, we can still graduate and that education is important, and to invest in yourself," she says. In her job as an HR coordinator, Ashley is thrilled that she can now focus on finding job opportunities for those who have not had a conventional journey of education.
