With the Covid-19 throwing the world into lockdown, guidelines and restrictions on international travel were set in Fiji. Local reef ecologist Sangeeta Mangubhai explains the benefits of Covid restrictions, as it lowers the amount of parachute science in the country. Parachute science is when foreign scientists travel to regions to collect data without engaging with local and indigenous researchers. Mangubhai explains that this is a harmful practice, as researchers dismiss the work that local scientists have been doing for years and exploit indigenous communities in the name of lazily conducted research. With Covid restrictions preventing many foreign researchers from parachuting in, Mangubhai and her team had more opportunities to conduct new research previously dominated by foreigners.
