Gullu Chaudhary, a boatman in Northern India, saved a 21-day-old baby girl floating in the Ganges River. The motive for the abandonment of the baby is still unclear. However, because having daughters is seen as a financial burden in much of India, mothers who cannot care for a female child get abortions, or, in some cases, kill or abandon their babies. Chaudhary is being praised for saving the child and rewarded with government benefits, as well as a new house.
