Helping unrelated people room together in boarding houses, which was common in the 1800s, is again becoming popular to address the US housing crisis of supply and affordability. In addition, states and cities are loosening zoning rules that restrict group living, thus making housing more affordable and available. Washington State, for example, is considering allowing groups of people who aren't family to live together. Given that the US has 54 million spare bedrooms, such legislative changes can definitely make a dent in the housing crisis.
