Marieke Laliveld had heard the fire alarm and was on her way out of her high-rise apartment building when she noticed an elderly neighbor sitting on a chair outside a suite, unable to get down the stairs herself. Marieke and two young men carried the woman down 15 flights of stairs to safety. "I'm a little emotional about it still, because we didn't know almost if we were going to make it," she said. "We saw a lot of smoke come out of the building." Family members said the woman hadn't left her apartment in three years.
