Large woolly mammoths roamed Alaska and Yukon 12,000 years ago, and miners in the area have been finding their bones strewn around for more than a century. Trey Charlie, a placer miner at the Little Flake Mine, was working with his excavator a couple of weeks ago, looking for minerals in the Indian River outside Dawson City, Yukon, when he came upon a huge tusk. Amazed by its size and weight, he and his friends dug further and located bones belonging to at least two of these large, furry elephant-like creatures. The find has been turned over to the government, as required by law. For the miners, it was an unforgettable experience.
