After spending over six years apart, nine-year-old Emely and her mother, Glenda Valdez, were at last reunited in June 2021 at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Glenda emigrated to the U.S. in search of a better life, leaving Emely in the custody of caretakers back home in Mexico. But the reunion story was not an easy one. A caregiver spent several weeks helping Emely get to the border. Then she walked with a group of strangers for six hours before meeting Border Patrol on the Texas side of the U.S.-Mexico border. After seeing her daughter by accident on a Univision newscast, Valdez immediately called U.S. authorities with the hope of reuniting with her daughter. And they were. Emely now awaits her court date for asylum claims; in the meantime, she is happily spending time with her mother in Texas. Well, the plan is everything that God wants and to be with her here, Valdez said. To never be separated again. To ask God that we may never be separated again. To give her all of the love that I haven't been able to give her."
