The Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention project is a network of regional forestry initiatives in the southern United States aiming to help Black owners use their land resources to sustain themselves. Ninety percent of Black owners have lost their landholdings during the last century to predatory developers and lack of access to legal advice. Lack of awareness about the income generating potential of the woodland that they own is another contributing factor. The project helps people to see the forest land as an asset rather than as a liability, helping with forest management and resource planning, including legal advice on how to retain the land in the family. Long-term timber income and certification as a sustainable forest is helping many families to re-claim their dignity and rights.
