Germany, Europe's biggest economy, has passed a major milestone in clean energy transportation by making one in five cars it produces a plug-in electric. Data released in March from VDA, the country's leading automotive industry association, reports that it is outputting 74,000 battery-electric (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) each month. By the end of 2021, total output will be nearly 1 million.
