A study conducted by the Sao Paulo state government in Brazil has found that a vaccine by Chinese manufacturer, Sinovac Biotech Ltd., which hasn't yet been approved by WHO, has brought down the rate of Covid-related deaths by 95 percent in the town of Serrana. About 75 percent of the town's 45,000 people had been vaccinated and in an area which had been ravaged by the PI variant first found in Brazil, the effectiveness of the shot brought relief and hope. Approved vaccines like those manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer have been snapped up by wealthier nations, leaving countries like Brazil with huge populations with no choice but to turn to Chinese vaccines like Coronavac, which has come under scrutiny after only partial disclosures of trial data were made. While positive reports from most countries that have used Coronavac have been gradually building up, citing 94 to 98 percent efficacy, the WHO is awaiting data from the company about the manufacturing process and the shot's safety before granting final approval.
