Scientists have restored limited sight to a 58-year-old man with the inherited eye disease retinitis pigmentosa, by genetically reengineering specific nerve cells to make them more sensitive to light. The man, blind for decades, now can see small objects when he wears specialized goggles. The breakthrough, described in the journal Nature Medicine, is part of an ongoing clinical trial that has been interrupted by the pandemic. The disease affects approximately 1 in 4,000 people worldwide.
