What happens when Shakespeare meets psychotherapy? In DE-CRUIT, 24 veterans experienced decreased levels of PTSD and depression after participating in the treatment program that combines Shakespearean plays and psychotherapy. It seems the rhythmic nature of iambic pentameter, along with monologues that match the traumatic experiences of patients, together help with the healing process. "Like Claudius, as I humbled my 'stubborn knees' to accept love and assistance while rusted in time and trauma," said Frank Lesnefsky, a veteran whose life has been transformed by DE-CRUIT, "my heart's 'strings of steel' began to give way to healing." DE-CRUIT is hoping to extend the treatment program to incarcerated veterans and gradually to all inmates at a local prison.
