A 10-year-old refugee from Nigeria named Tanitoluwa "Tani" Adewumi recently won the title of US National Chess Master one year after learning how to play while he and his family were living in a homeless shelter. Following the publication of a New York Times article on Tani and his family, thousands of readers from around the country donated to a GoFundMe page that Tani's father set up. Within 24 hours they had raised enough money to help Tani and his family find a home and pay for his education. Tani recently wrote a book about this journey entitled My Name Is Tani . . . and I Believe in Miracles. Tani's story is one of hope, devotion and compassion and serves as a tangible reminder that the future of children and families labeled at risk, particularly when encountering hardship and uncertainty, is always unfolding and yet to be determined.
