The workday of veteran teacher Barb Heim is not done until she makes a 20-minute drive from school to deliver the day's lesson to a special student in a fight for his life. Heim is going the extra mile to ensure that second-grader Harrison Conner keeps his spirits up and his learning on track as he goes through treatment for leukemia. They've been doing this for a while, as Harrison was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2020. It's not like a teacher coming here for school. She's like an aunt who is coming over to hang out, and she brings goodies, and she is always bringing a smile, said Suzanne Conner, Harrison's mom. As grateful as the family is for Heim's support, Heim is grateful for the role she is able to play in Harrison's life. She says, I'm lucky to be his teacher. I'm the lucky one.
