Young people are winning court rulings that their governments must take stronger action to protect the climate from catastrophic future change, because they will have to deal with the results. Such rulings have been made recently in French and German courts, and the European Court of Human Rights has fast-tracked a case against 33 governments brought by six young Portuguese activists. The German government has responded to the court ruling by proposing to raise its target for cutting emissions. However, young plaintiffs say that setting targets is not the same thing as acting to mitigate climate change, and that government actions are making it impossible to achieve the targets that have been agreed internationally.
