Philip Kafka, a real estate investor and developer, is making a splash in Detroit, Mich., with his Quonset-hut-based residences. “I call what we do 'Home Depot architecture',” Kafka said. “It’s figuring out how to use Home Depot materials and make good architecture.” The choice of the Quonset hut as a starting place allows Kafka to provide people with affordable and high-quality housing. He combines a light-filled interior with thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces. He has completed two projects in Detroit with Quonset huts and is starting another in Texas.
