While some experts think the pandemic may change societal mental health forever, research on human resilience suggests that most people will recover FROM its trauma faster than many believe. Surveys showing increased anxiety and depression may reflect temporary symptoms that do not lead to mental illness, says a psychiatrist who works with private patients and health care staff. Maintaining social bonds and exercising can relieve stress for most people at home. However, two `groups` will need access to long-term care: frontline workers who experience chronic unremitting stress, and people of color, whose suicide rates in the U.S. have risen even as national rates dropped.
