Public health measures taken to stop coronavirus spread probably are behind the swift global decrease in influenza cases, because both illnesses spread the same way, experts suggest. About 600 people died from flu in the US during the 2020-2021 flu season, down from 22,000 deaths the previous season and 34,000 two seasons ago. However, there is concern that the small number of cases may affect next year's flu vaccine if typical flu patterns return. There is also concern about toddlers missing a chance to develop an early age immune response.
