A record 1,087 humpback whales in 670 pods were observed migrating to waters off Amami-Oshima Island in the southwestern Japan prefecture of Kagoshima between December 2020 and March 2021. Humpbacks migrate in winter to waters around Amami-Oshima to breed and raise young. They spend their summers in cold waters off the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia. Confirmed whale numbers have been increasing for six consecutive years.
