Cornwall’s social enterprise Waterhaul is leading the “Retask the Mask” campaign to combat the environmental impact of single-use face masks. They chose Earth Day to launch the initiative. Approximately 58 million masks are used in a day in the UK, making them one of the most common forms of plastic pollution. Waterhaul has trialed the project with Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. The hospital melts down masks with a machine on-site, producing plastic blocks that they sell to Waterhaul. Waterhaul then uses the plastic blocks to manufacture “litter pickers,” which are used to pick up trash without touching the waste. Their aim is to inspire an environmental clean-up, globally and closer to home, by encouraging people to join their campaign.
