Caps and pickup trucks, not cowboy hats and horses, now are a common sight on Bobby Helmers' southwestern Texas ranch after his oil wells were replaced by six giant wind turbines three years ago. Oil revenues had steadily dropped on the ranch, which has been in his wife's family for three generations. The turbines, which share space with 125 Brangus cows, generate half of the ranch's operating revenue. Petroleum-rich Texas is now the top wind energy producer and second-biggest producer of solar energy in the US.
