Din College, the first accredited college to be tribally controlled, continues educating its 1,324 students academically and traditionally in spite of Covid-19's impact on the Navajo Nation. Despite strict public health rules, 1,187 Navajo have died and almost 30,000 have become ill, many of them the elders who hold traditional knowledge. College officials see both threat and opportunity. While the Navajo Nation may be a generation away from losing its language, the many young learners mean it's also a generation away from preserving its language, culture, arts, crafts and skills, college officials say.
