The "sweet older guy" who brings 700-900 aluminum cans to All Metals Recycling twice a week is not homeless, as some people think, when they see him foraging in dumpsters. Gary Gates is a dedicated environmentalist who spent 19 years managing the multi-billion dollar Wisconsin pension system before he retired in 1993. Since the early 1980s, he has collected 2 million aluminum cans, donating the proceeds to environmental causes. If people who think he's homeless insist on giving him money, he adds that to the contribution.
