HSAVK, also known as the "whale capital" of Iceland, is a popular site for visitors to whale watch. Due to the coronavirus, the number of vacationers visiting the island has decreased over the past year. Without the loud noises from construction and cruise ships, the stress hormone levels in the whale population have decreased. Whale hunting has also been made extremely difficult, due to Covid social distancing regulations. Heimir Hardarson, the captain of a whale watching boat, predicts a decrease in commercial whaling in the future: "We got a new perspective, and it's just in that time that we realized really that our land is beautiful, our water is good and also that people were interested in whales." A decrease in whaling is not only good for the whales but also minimizes Iceland's carbon footprint.
