Liter of Lights is a grassroots movement made up of a network of volunteers and community partners committed to alleviating global plastic waste and energy poverty by providing affordable, low-tech, accessible and sustainable solar plastic water bottle lighting systems to people around the world who have limited or no access to electricity. Through a variety of upcycling, community involvement, educational and open-source strategies, the group's projects light up homes, businesses and city streets and enhance the capacities of marginalized communities “to maintain the lights and spread the initiative further.” In doing so, they also create employment opportunities in these communities. To date, Liter of Lights projects and initiatives have installed more than 350,000 bottle lights from recycled plastic bottles and locally sourced materials in more than 15 countries worldwide.
