Maryland resident Brandon Jones knew it would be a long shot, but he had to try. He contacted Steve Chu, one of the owners of the restaurant Ekiben in Baltimore to ask for the recipe for the broccoli tempura dish, which is his mother-in-law’s favorite meal. Jones’ mother-in-law is in the final stages of lung cancer and has stopped treatment. Brandon’s wife, Rina Jones, said, “She had always told us, ‘When I’m on my deathbed, I want to have that broccoli.'” Jones was stunned when the response came back from Ekiben owner Steve Chu, offering to meet Brandon and Rina in Vermont to make the dish fresh for Rina’s mother. Chu, Ekiben co-owner Ephrem Abebe, and colleague Joe Anonuevo, loaded their pickup and drove to Vermont. Rina’s mom was both stunned and thrilled to have her favorite dish delivered right to her front door.
