Fatima is an example of grit and determination; the first female tour guide in Afghanistan is mostly self-taught and was so committed to learning that when she couldn't afford notebooks, she wrote in the sand with a stick. She decided not to get married and forged her own path to employment. First, she worked on her English by joining Facebook and getting into groups interested in history; she started posting pieces about Afghanistan to show it as more than a place of war and conflict. Her posts got the attention of her first customer, who was visiting Afghanistan and asked her to show him around. Through word of mouth, more customers came and eventually she got a job with a boutique travel agency. Fatima is committed to not being the country's last female tour guide and hopes to open a school for tour guides, which will be open to both women and men.
