In an attempt to boost cycling in New York City, car lanes crossing two of the Big Apple's major bridges are set to be transformed into bike-only lanes. On the Brooklyn Bridge and Queensboro Bridge, bicyclists will soon have a lane reserved only for them, as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's "Bridges for the People" plan, which he announced on Thursday, January 28. "The Brooklyn Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge are iconic and deeply intertwined in the daily lives of countless New Yorkers, he said. Now it's time to bring them into the 21st century and embrace the future with a radical new plan. In addition, five new Bike Boulevards -- streets that give bicycles travel priority and put cyclists' safety first -- will be built in the city, and the city's Open Streets -- which started in 2020 due to the heightened demand for outdoor space brought on by the pandemic -- will become a permanent part of the cityscape.
