As teacher Marybeth Hearn retired this year after 33 years of teaching agriculture in San Joaquin, Calif., she could celebrate another accomplishment too. Hearn has been training puppies to become guide dogs for the visually impaired since she was 10 years old. Not only has Hearn trained 56 dogs on her own, she influenced two of her sons and a granddaughter to follow in her footsteps. She also has mentored a generation of student trainers who, since 1992, have worked with 170 dogs that ended up in a range of service posts. “I like doing something good for somebody I just haven’t had the chance to meet yet,” Hearn said.
