On New Year's Day, 20 U.S. states raised their minimum wage rates to adjust for cost-of-living increases. The amount wages have gone up for hourly workers varies state by state. California saw the highest baseline increase, Minnesota the lowest. "We have lots of low-wage service workers who are working through the Covid crisis, many of whom are in jobs with greater risk of transmission," Ken Jacobs, chair of the Center for Labor Research and Education at the UC Berkeley told CNN. "This will be a very welcome boost for them. As well, a lot of families are struggling right now in this crisis," he said.
