The Tampa Bay Times recently asked their readers what was the best thing that happened to them this year; they knew it was a loaded question and had low expectations for the answers. They were surprised. One reader wrote in, saying she learned to ride a bike during the pandemic -- at age 41. Laura Curts, the reader in question, told the Times, I never thought that, as an adult, there would be an experience that I should have had as a child, that would feel so euphoric. She can now go for bike rides with her children and husband. Another reader wrote in about how she kicked her worst habit this year: biting her nails, which has been a challenge since about age 6. When a friend offered a home manicure, the reader found the swiping of the nail file like a meditation and kept it up; she now has healthy, normal-looking nails. Other pandemic bests included a divorce 5 years in the making and buying a house for the first time. Turns out, pandemic silver linings are not as uncommon as some of us thought.
