In India's eastern state of Odisha, more than 475,000 endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles have come ashore. Every year, they dig their nests and lay eggs along 3.75-mile long Rushikulya Beach. It's a sight to behold. Typically, hoards of tourists crowd the beaches to the witness the miraculous scene, inadvertently disrupting the cycle. Other hazards like poachers are known to rob and sell the eggs at local markets. Not this year. With India on lockdown for Covid-19, authorities are expecting the most successful mass nesting in years, estimating that 60 million eggs will be laid (according to the original report in The Hindu newspaper).
