Cowboy Caitlin Gooch brings together her passion for horses and children’s literacy through her non-profit Saddle Up And Ride (SUAR.) Gooch grew up around horses and considers herself blessed to have had this experience. “Horses are non-judgmental. They don’t snap at you, they don’t undermine any of your thoughts,” she said. The idea for pairing her passions started when Gooch saw children struggle with literacy firsthand, when she worked at a day care center. Gooch teamed up with her local library; children checking out more than 3 books were entered into a drawing to win a visit to her family’s horse farm. These days SUAR organizes book drives and school-wide reading competitions, and Gooch literally saddles up a horse and visits elementary schools, libraries and youth groups, encouraging them to read.
