On Nov. 28, 2020, a male Sumatran orangutan named Mathaï was born in Belgium's Pairi Daiza animal park. Mathaï and his older brother Berani are the only orangutans to have been born in the park. Orangutans are critically endangered. Over the past 30 years, about 80% of natural orangutan habitat has been irreplaceably lost, according to wildlife nonprofit Born Free. The organization also reports that there are about 14,000 Sumatran orangutans, which are one of three species of orangutans. It is estimated that 45,000-69,000 Bornean orangutans and just 800 Tapanuli orangutans remain on the planet. Against that backdrop, Mathaï's birth is a joyously welcome arrival.
